Angola, LA

Round 3 of the ’12 LACC Series took place under warm sunny skies and in a very unique venue - the LA State Penitentiary!

Warden Cain & Chris Van Way by Chris Shows
LSP (also known as Angola) opened it’s main gates to allow over 500 off-road racers and spectators in the 18,000 acre property to camp in a beautiful pasture and race in the Tunica Hills.

Angola was once known as the bloodiest prisons in America but now under Warden Burl Cain things are much different primarily due to his emphasis on moral rehabilitation and faith-based programs.  Warden Cain and LACC supporter Chris Van Way went the extra mile to make sure the event was fun for all and the course was possible for the less experienced riders.  Even after many days of dozer work the 200+ foot elevation changes and single track sections were still very challenging for some.

All eyes were on Round 1 and 2 overall winner Martin Howell (KTM) but to the surprise of many Forrest Smith (YAM/Fly/WPS/Bayou Suspension) grabbed the holeshot and never looked back.  Smith earned $350 cash for his first overall LACC victory and for the Transmissions Inc. Fast Lap award.

Smith has run up front several times in the past but always seemed to have bad luck with mechanical problems…but not at “The Farm” – another nickname for Angola.

Martin Howell (SMS KTM / JM Suspension / Answer / Motorex FMF) got caught in some chaos in the second turn but still managed to work his way up to second, only six seconds behind Smith.  KTM pilot Bryan Vaughan (Pivot Works/Vertex Pistons/DP Brakes/SMS/Graham KTM) stayed consistent and once again finished on the podium in third.  Ryan Breaux (KTM/Performance Cycles/Chuck’s Appliance) and Hutton Woods (KTM/Mike’s Outdoors/Woods Tank) rounded out the top five overall and XC1 class with some solid rides through the hilly terrain.

In the XC2 Lites class Clint Woods (KTM/Mike’s Outdoors/Woods Tank) came up through the pack after a bad start and took the class win.  Woods was followed by Corey Altazin (KTM/WPS/Fly) in second and Jacob Wheat (KTM/Bayou Suspension/Fly) in third.  As usual a ton of links to pictures and videos from this event can be found on www.AcadianaRacing.com.
